The Polans may never have existed — historians question early Polish statehood myths

New historical research challenges the widely accepted narrative of the Polans and other so-called proto-Polish tribes such as the Vistulans. Analysis of the oldest written sources suggests many of these ethnic groups may be later historiographical constructs rather than documented historical facts.
