Germany's former 'death strip' border zone bids for UNESCO World Heritage status
German federal states have joined forces to protect a 95-kilometre stretch of the former inner-German border, once known as the "death strip" between East and West Germany. The area, formerly lined with fences and military watchtowers, has evolved into a thriving ecological corridor. The historic and environmental project aims to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for the site.
