Luiz Carlos Barreto, one of the leading figures of Brazil's Cinema Novo movement of the 1960s and 1970s, died in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, aged 98. He was widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Brazilian film history. Brazil has declared three days of national mourning in his honour.
