850,000-year-old Homo antecessor bones in Atapuerca show signs of cannibalism
Archaeologists at the Gran Dolina site in Spain's Sierra de Atapuerca have unearthed 24 new Homo antecessor bones dating back approximately 850,000 years. Some of the bones bear marks consistent with cannibalistic practices, notably on adult remains — a new finding, as such traces had previously been found mainly on younger individuals. The hunger hypothesis has been ruled out, and researchers continue to investigate the reasons behind these practices.
