Orcas smash sunfish into pieces in newly documented Gulf of California behaviour

Orcas in the Gulf of California were observed working in pairs to smash dead sharp-tail sunfish — which can weigh up to 2,000 kg — into small pieces, with findings published in Frontiers in Ethology. One orca gripped the carcass while a second charged and struck just as it was released. Scientists believe the technique may help younger whales feed on the large, bony fish more easily.
