Orcas smash giant sunfish to pieces – scientists say it may be play
Researchers observed orcas holding giant ocean sunfish in their jaws while a second whale rammed the prey at high speed, exploding it into thousands of pieces. Because the fish was already dead when smashed, scientists believe the behaviour may be a form of play or entertainment. The ritual may also help younger whales digest the food more easily.
