Obesity may silently impair memory through ageing-like brain changes, rat study suggests
Animal studies suggest that obesity triggers brain processes similar to those seen in ageing, potentially harming memory and cognitive performance. Researchers caution that findings from rat experiments cannot be directly applied to humans and that the mechanism requires further investigation. The discovery may nonetheless point to a new avenue for research into dementia and neurodegenerative disease.
