Memmingen, Bavaria: hundreds leap into a canal at the sound of a signal
Memmingen is a Bavarian town best known for its budget airport, but every year in the second half of July it hosts one of Germany's most unusual traditions. At the sound of a signal, hundreds of people jump into the town canal, keeping alive an old local custom. Travellers are encouraged to stop there rather than heading straight to Munich or the Alps.
