IFFHS names Vinčič best World Cup final referee despite widespread criticism
The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has named Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčič the best World Cup final referee, despite widespread expert criticism of his handling of the Spain–Argentina final (1:0). Poland's Szymon Marciniak climbed six places in the ranking but did not officiate the final. The IFFHS verdict has surprised the football community given the controversies that marred the match.
