Heavily modified Mercedes G550 bids $60,000 below owner's investment

The seller equipped the G-Wagen with a ‘Carlex Design-style’ bodykit from China.

A set of 22-inch wheels was also ordered from Alibaba and fitted to the SUV.

Spend big money personalizing a car, and the market rarely pays you back for it. The owner of a US-market Mercedes-Benz G550 is finding that out the expensive way, having poured tens of thousands of dollars into modifications only to watch the truck’s value head in the wrong direction. Most buyers want a G-Wagon in factory trim, so anything bolted on beyond that reads as a bill to undo rather than a feature worth paying for.

This 2025 G-Wagen was listed for auction on Cars & Bids earlier this week. A look at the window sticker reveals it had an original price tag of $172,355, but the owner spent roughly $50,000 on several modifications, both on the exterior and interior, without touching the powertrain, pushing the total to just over $222,000, which was likely the reserve they hoped would let them break even.

The most obvious change is the bodykit. The listing describes it as a “ Carlex Design-style exterior treatment inspired by the renowned Polish coachbuilder’s bespoke G-Class builds “, bringing new bumpers, grilles, fender flares, and a two-tone color scheme in the vein of the retro upgrades sold by Carlex Design .

A look at the invoices provided in the auction shows it doesn’t have a genuine Carlex kit, but rather what appears to be an imitation kit ordered off Alibaba, which cost $18,300. In addition, the 22-inch wheels were also ordered from Alibaba for $5,000.

Although the kit isn’t genuine, we do think it looks quite nice and is a welcome reprieve from some of the overly aggressive styling tweaks offered by many tuners for the G. The wrap, combining silver across the top half of the Mercedes and satin black across the bottom half, also looks great.

A Costly Lesson

The seats, door panels, and steering wheel are now trimmed in a combination of new red and black leather. While the leather may appeal to some, it’s almost certainly too dramatic for many others.

Evidently, that alone wasn’t enough to convince anyone to pay even the model’s MSRP, never mind its price after the modifications. Bidding ended up topping out at $160,000, despite the fact that the odometer sits at just 79 miles (127 km), which is basically delivery mileage. Clearly, the seller’s decision to personalize it to their tastes didn’t translate well into the open market.
