Surround sound channel numbers explained: what 5.1, 7.1.4 and more really mean

Surround sound configurations are described by up to three numbers: the first denotes main speakers, the second a subwoofer, and the third overhead speakers for Atmos or DTS:X. A 5.1 setup — five speakers plus one subwoofer — is sufficient for most home theatres. More channels do not automatically improve the experience; room size and shape matter more than raw speaker count.
