New 2D lanthanide MXenes combine semiconducting and magnetic properties

Researchers have created a new family of two-dimensional materials called lanthanide MXenes (Ln2CT2) using a bottom-up synthesis strategy involving intercalated halides. These materials combine semiconducting behaviour with ferromagnetism, making them promising for spintronic applications. The study was published in Nature on 22 July 2026.
