Brown bullhead catfish melanoma identified as a new transmissible cancer

Whole-genome sequencing of tumour and matched non-tumour tissues from brown bullhead catfish has revealed that the fish's melanoma is a novel naturally occurring transmissible cancer. The finding adds a new entry to the rare list of known contagious cancers in animals. The study was published in Nature on 22 July 2026.
