Fossil reveals brain and ecological diversity in the earliest snakes

A well-preserved Late Cretaceous fossil snake from Brazil demonstrates that the earliest snakes already displayed significant diversity in brain shape and ecological habits. The find sheds new light on the early evolution of snakes as a group. The study appeared in Nature on 22 July 2026.
