Drosophila flies use vector memory to navigate odour plumes

Using a virtual reality system, researchers showed that Drosophila flies rely on memory mechanisms to navigate along the boundary of an odour plume and track its source — a vector-based navigation strategy. The finding offers new insight into how insects use olfactory information for spatial orientation. The study was published in Nature on 22 July 2026.
