Scientists Map Great Barrier Reef Microbiome, Discovering 500 Unknown Bacterial Species

Researchers analysed DNA from seawater samples taken at 48 reefs across the Great Barrier Reef, producing the first comprehensive map of its microbiome. They identified more than 500 bacterial species previously unknown to science and documented over 360,000 distinct viruses from roughly 362,802 estimated viral types. The study mirrors the landmark mapping of the human microbiome completed more than a decade ago, offering new insights into reef ecosystem health.
