What happens when you try to split a photon in two?
A trio of Norwegian physicists has explored what happens when a photon is mid-reflection from a perfect mirror and the mirror is suddenly removed. Although a photon is a single quantum of light, it is an extended object rather than a point particle, making the question physically meaningful. Their findings, published on arxiv.org, turned out to be more complex than the authors initially expected.
