China rejects Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, leaving Putin without a key energy deal

Beijing has definitively rejected the construction of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which was meant to carry Russian gas to China. Putin had pursued the project for years as a strategic alternative to European energy markets. A Chinese commentator writing under the pseudonym Riyue Xhig noted the shift in leverage: "This is no longer ordinary trade negotiations — it reflects a fundamental change in who holds the ace."
