We Live a Decade Longer, but Spend 10.7 Years of It in Poor Health

A major "Global Burden of Disease" report published in The Lancet Public Health finds that global life expectancy rose from 64.6 years in 1990 to 73.8 years in 2023. However, the time spent in poor health grew even faster — from 8.8 to 10.7 years — a trend scientists call the "morbidity gap." The average person now spends nearly 15% of their life dealing with chronic illness.
