World's oldest weapon is over 400,000 years old — and wasn't made by modern humans
The oldest undisputed weapon is the Clacton Spear, a sharpened yew wood tip unearthed in Essex, England in 1911 and dating back over 400,000 years — predating modern humans. Researchers from the Society for Combat Archaeology identified three candidates for the title, stressing that context, microscopic wear patterns and evidence of intentional shaping are key to classification. The 37 cm tip likely broke from a longer shaft used to hunt large game.
