A new analysis of nickel concentrations in the global sediment layer at the Cretaceous-Paleogene (KPg) boundary suggests the Chicxulub impactor was not a typical asteroid but a rare type of carbonaceous chondrite. This type of space rock releases different chemical compounds upon impact, potentially causing more severe atmospheric and climate disruption than previously modelled. The finding could shift scientific debate about why dinosaurs went extinct so rapidly.
