Sobibor Landscape Park: Rare Turtles and Dark WWII History on Poland's Eastern Border

Sobibor Landscape Park on Poland's eastern border with Belarus contains the "Żółwiowe Błota" nature reserve, one of Europe's last refuges for the critically endangered European pond turtle. The reserve's core is three lakes — Wspólne, Kobyłka and Pereszpa — surrounded by vast peatlands and bog forests. The area also carries dark memories from World War II. Park authorities limit tourist access to protect the fragile wetland ecosystem.
