Japan logs its first ever 'cruelly hot day' as Gifu and Aichi hit 40°C

Japan recorded its first official kokushobi — "cruelly hot day" — since the designation for temperatures above 40°C was introduced by the Japan Meteorological Agency in April. On Tuesday, Gujo and Tajimi in Gifu prefecture and Toyota in Aichi prefecture all hit 40°C; Gujo's 40°C and Toyota's 40.1°C were all-time highs for their weather stations. Authorities advised workers to wear shorts to the office to cope with the extreme heat.
