Euclid data reveals new clues about how spiral galaxy arms form
New research using data from the Euclid space telescope finds links between a galaxy's mass, its star formation rate and the number of its spiral arms. Scientists still do not fully understand how spiral arms form and persist for hundreds of millions of years, or why some galaxies have one, two or more arms. The findings offer fresh clues toward solving one of astronomy's long-standing mysteries, using galaxies such as the Whirlpool as case studies.
