Planets smaller than Mars can't hold an atmosphere — ruling out alien life

Planetary scientist Michelle Hill and colleagues at UC Riverside simulated the atmospheres of rocky exoplanets of varying sizes orbiting sun-like stars in the habitable zone. Their findings show a planet must be at least as large as Mars to retain an atmosphere for the several billion years needed for life to emerge. The result significantly narrows the search for potentially life-bearing worlds beyond our solar system.
