Naked mole-rat queens emit a special scent that stops rivals from reproducing

A new study finds that naked mole-rat queens use a specific chemical compound in their scent to prevent other females in the colony from reproducing. The naked mole-rat is one of only two known mammal species with a bee- or ant-like social hierarchy dominated by a single ruling queen. The discovery sheds new light on how eusociality evolved in mammals.
