Anthropic's $1.5bn copyright settlement approved; authors get ~$3,000 per work
A judge approved a $1.5 billion settlement between Anthropic and a class of authors, making it the largest copyright settlement ever reached and the largest copyright class-action ever certified. Authors stand to receive an estimated $3,000 per work. Around 350 authors opted out, hoping to pursue higher damages individually; the court had previously found that training AI on books constituted fair use, but that Anthropic's piracy of the works likely did not.
