Perseid shooting stars: a journey billions of miles and thousands of years in the making

Every Perseid meteor is a fragment from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, a 16-mile-wide (26 km) icy body that travels between the outer and inner solar system. As it nears the Sun, ice on the comet's surface sublimates directly into gas, releasing embedded dust and rock particles into interplanetary space. When Earth passes through this debris trail, the particles burn up in the atmosphere, producing the vivid streaks of light known as Perseid shooting stars.
