Newborn SMA Screening Is Progress, but Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Must Follow
England will introduce newborn screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) from 2027, a major step welcomed by doctors and families. However, medical letters urge the government to also include Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), which affects around 100 boys born each year in England. Early diagnosis would allow faster access to emerging treatments like Givinostat, currently being held back by delayed detection.
