Asteroid breakup 800 million years ago bombarded the inner Solar System with debris

Researchers at the Southwest Research Institute, led by Dr. William F. Bottke, have identified the likely cause of a major bombardment of the inner Solar System around 800 million years ago: the catastrophic breakup of the parent body of the Eulalia asteroid family. Evidence for the event is preserved in the Moon's crater record, which — unlike Earth's constantly reshaped surface — retains ancient geological signatures. The findings have been accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal.
