Nicaragua's Ortega declares end to elections, cementing dictatorship

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has declared that no further general elections will be held in the country, Reuters reported. Ortega has governed without interruption since 2007 and has steadily dismantled democratic checks on his power. The announcement formally closes off any peaceful path to a change of government in Nicaragua.
