Plasmon-Enhanced Generator Achieves 7× Better Efficiency Than RTGs for Deep Space
University of Utah researchers are developing a Plasmon-Enhanced Radioisotope Thermophotovoltaic (PRTPV) generator targeting a specific power of 17 W/kg and thermal-to-electric conversion efficiency above 40% — a sevenfold improvement over current RTGs. The system replaces the traditional vacuum gap between heat source and photovoltaic cell with a high-refractive-index material such as Al₂O₃, boosting energy transfer. It is designed primarily for interstellar missions where conventional RTGs fall short.
