New Metamaterial Passively Controls Lunar Equipment Temperature Without Power

Virginia Tech researchers are developing a Variable Thermal Conductivity Metamaterial (VTCM) to passively regulate the temperature of small, independent mobile systems on the Moon. Existing thermal management solutions work for large infrastructure but fail small mobile devices that cannot rely on heaters or significant power draw. The VTCM outperforms other variable-conductivity materials and can be tailored to survive the extreme temperature swings of the lunar environment.
