NASA Concept: 10,000 Steerable Femtosats to Map Saturn's Rings In-Situ

Northwestern University researchers propose a constellation of ~10,000 actively steerable femtosatellites to map the composition of Saturn's rings, atmosphere and magnetic field in situ. A single flagship mission like Cassini could not safely penetrate the rings due to collision risk, but a distributed swarm can afford to lose many units while still completing the survey. The concept was selected under NASA's NIAC 2026 programme.
