Robot-Assembled Metamaterial Arrays Could Track Cislunar Space Traffic

Researchers at Duke University propose robotically assembled electromagnetic metamaterial antennas to track objects in cislunar space, where ground-based radar arrays become impractical. The US Space Surveillance Network currently monitors objects down to about 4 inches in low Earth orbit, but growing cislunar traffic demands new solutions. Metamaterial-based radar systems could dramatically reduce required antenna sizes while maintaining detection performance at extreme distances.
