NASA Concept Would Image Exoplanet Continents Using Optical VLBI
Researchers at Brookhaven Science Associates are developing a concept called "dynamic hierarchical nulling" — an interferometer combining inputs from multiple apertures that can separate starlight from planet light at a contrast ratio of 10^10. Two such nulling instruments placed on spacecraft ~100 km apart would form a Michelson interferometer capable of reconstructing surface features of Earth-like exoplanets in visible light. The project represents the first serious design for imaging alien continents at optical wavelengths.
