Milky Way Was Flipped Upside Down 10 Billion Years Ago in Galaxy Collision

Researchers at Durham University have found evidence that the Milky Way was struck head-on by a dwarf galaxy called the Gaia Sausage around 10 billion years ago, flipping it onto its side into its current orientation. The cataclysmic collision occurred billions of years before the solar system formed. The discovery sheds new light on the early violent history of our galaxy.
