Swissair Flight 111 Memorial at Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia

On September 2, 1998 Swissair Flight 111 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. All 215 passengers and 14 crew members perished in the crash. The crash site is near entrance to St. Margaret’s Bay, approx. 8km or 5mi off shore, and equidistant from the town of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater, NS.

A small roadside marker points the visitor to a small parking area and short walking trail within the Peggy's Cove Preservation Area. The easy to walk trail leads to a beautiful granite stone memorial. The location of the memorial was chosen because of its proximity to the communities of Peggy's Cove and Blandford which were central to the recovery operation following the crash.

The design of the memorial points the visitor to three sites which form a triangle. Standing between the two oval shaped granite markers and looking out toward the water, the line on your right points toward Bayswater Beach. The sight line to your left points you toward the crash site which is on the horizon. The Whalesback, where you are standing, lies at the Eastern tip of the triangle.

The memorial design is meant to be modest and quiet to stay consistent with the coastal environment.
