D-Day Normandy Beaches Could Soon Join UNESCO World Heritage List

Normandy's D-Day landing beaches could be added to UNESCO's World Heritage list, with the UN cultural agency set to announce its decision between July 24 and 27. The designation would recognise the beaches' "outstanding universal value" and boost their international profile. The nomination is the culmination of a project launched nearly 20 years ago and includes a beach where Allied forces constructed an artificial harbour.
