Israel and Lebanon trial 'safe zones' handing three villages to Lebanese Army

Israel has launched a pilot "safe zones" programme in southern Lebanon, handing control of three villages to the Lebanese Army as Beirut seeks to assert authority in the region. The move comes as Lebanese President Joseph Aoun visits Washington — the first official visit by a Lebanese head of state since 2009. Israel maintains it will not withdraw its forces until Hezbollah is disarmed, a condition the Lebanese army is widely seen as unable to fulfil.
