Dying Sun-like stars may propel themselves through space via asymmetric gas bursts

Dying Sun-like stars may not fade quietly: uneven blobs of gas erupting from their swollen surfaces give each star a tiny push in the opposite direction. Scientists suggest that thousands of such random kicks could eventually break apart distant stellar pairs or, in rare cases, drive two stars into a violent collision.
