Heavy TV watching in midlife linked to smaller brain regions decades later
A study of around 1,700 adults found that frequent TV viewers in midlife later showed smaller brain regions linked to memory, decision-making and visual processing, as well as greater white matter damage. Crucially, sedentary behaviour alone was not the main driver — people who sat for long hours in mentally engaging jobs showed healthier brain patterns. The findings suggest it is passive, mentally unstimulating screen time that poses the greatest risk.
