Scientists read entire charred Herculaneum scroll without unrolling it
For the first time in nearly 2,000 years, scientists have fully read a charred papyrus scroll from Herculaneum without physically unrolling it, marking a breakthrough in ancient studies. The scroll was carbonised during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and had remained unreadable for centuries. Researchers used advanced imaging techniques to reveal the text hidden inside the damaged manuscript.
