EU farm subsidies push up prices of fruit and vegetables, UN warns

A UN Food and Agriculture Organization report published Tuesday found that EU subsidies heavily favour grains and the meat sector, making it disproportionately expensive to produce fruit, vegetables and legumes. The cost of a healthy diet in Europe rose 36% between 2021 and 2025, driven by pandemic inflation, the Ukraine war and skewed farm policy. FAO's lead agrifood economics director David Laborde described the subsidy structure as an "indirect taxation" on healthy eating.
