Scientists close in on treatments for cancer's deadly wasting disease

Cachexia — the severe wasting and fatigue that often accompanies cancer — kills many patients independently of the tumour itself. Scientists are making progress in understanding its biological mechanisms, and potential treatments may be on the horizon, according to a paper published in Nature on 21 July 2026.
