Philippines summons Chinese envoy, Japan protests after live-fire near its waters

The Philippine president announced on Tuesday that China's ambassador had been summoned following a clash between coast guard vessels in the South China Sea, in which a Filipino sailor was injured. Japan filed an official protest after Chinese and Russian naval exercises involved live-fire within its exclusive economic zone. Both incidents are straining China's relations with its neighbours ahead of an ASEAN summit in Manila.
