China fires live ammunition in Japan's exclusive economic zone; Tokyo protests

China conducted live-fire exercises for the first time in waters that Japan considers its exclusive economic zone, in what Tokyo views as a show of force. A Russian vessel also took part in the drills. Japan has filed an official diplomatic protest note with Beijing over the incident.
