40-year mystery of Milky Way's "galactic lobe" solved — it's a gas bubble 6,500 light-years away

Astronomers led by Kathryn Kreckel of Heidelberg University have resolved a more than 40-year debate over a mysterious radio structure near the centre of the Milky Way. The so-called "galactic centre lobe" is not located in the galaxy's nucleus itself, but is instead a closed bubble of ionised gas roughly 6,500 light-years from Earth. The finding puts an end to decades of scientific disagreement about the object's true nature.
