Keeping a prisoner in Poland costs PLN 6,900 a month — more than the average pension

According to 2025 data from Poland's Prison Service, the average monthly cost of keeping one inmate is over PLN 6,900 — significantly more than the average pension. Only just over half of prisoners are employed, whether paid or unpaid. The figures highlight the growing financial burden the prison system places on the state budget.
