Firefighting Drones Tested in California and Alaska to Combat Year-Round Wildfires

Drones capable of spraying water and fire retardants are being tested in California and Alaska this summer as a rapid-response tool against early-stage wildfires. While smaller than crewed airtankers with shorter ranges, they aim to help crews extinguish fires before they grow destructive. The $11 million XPRIZE competition is among the initiatives supporting the technology, alongside California's CAL FIRE agency.
